Paraguay's new president has been sworn in, bringing an end to more than six decades of one-party rule.
Fernando Lugo, a former bishop, once led anti-government protests and fought for peasant rights.
Key to his victory was his promise of land reform. Now that Lugo's in power, the poor who helped propel him to victory will be watching to see if he delivers on the promise. Lucia Newman reports.

  • injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere...its a shame that we the majority let the minority rule us....

  • yup yup

  • wo i all latin american countries it the same a few hold all the money while the majority suffers in haiti just like paraguay less the than 5% holds half the country riches and 70 % off all land

  • Right. Just as it's hard to fight fire with fire, it's hard to fight government with more government. Even the government offering the best hope to the peasants is vowing to protect "legally acquired" property, presumably by protecting it from those very same peasants. Those peasants own the land they use in a way that no title-holder ever could, and it should be seen as such.

  • Unfortunately it will be hard to remedy hundreds of years of injustices, corruption and bad governance with a new government, no matter how good.

  • My sunflower seeds! Nooooooo, I cannot live without mah sunflower seeds!

  • Globalization 101.

  • In Latin America activism is easy govering is hard.
