A detailed review and philosophy about one of Nutnfancy's backpacking systems. This system sides with the firepower side of my "Mobility vs Firepower" concept (i.e. gear will provide high capabilities for the given weight and bulk). The gear shown and discussed is designed for establishing a base camp near a high mountain lake about 8 to 15 miles deep into remote and steep Rocky Mountain terrain, at around 10,000 or more elevation. And yes there are still lots of places like this that still exist. This system generally does not represent a good hike through option (ie 10 or so miles hiked each day to different locations) as theres too much weight to be carrying in daily long distance hiking. However if your preference is to bivouac at a remote and secluded area, like Nutnfancy, you may find some new ideas for you here. In this original video series, you will see a selection of Nutnfancys clothing, cooking, water prep and storage, carry, knife and tool, fire making, sleeping, shelter, first aid, nautical (!), rappelling (!), and contingency options. Most of the gear shown has been proven effective for the purposes discussed and every selection is scrutinized for it merits and capabilities for its weight and bulk. Sure this all adds up to a heavy 80+ lb pack but the capabilities that it delivers in the high country will blow all other backpackers systems away (based on decades of real experience) and will provide memorable adventure. Yep, this IS an EIGHT PART series but as you will see there is A LOT to cover and its by request by my faithful subscribers. If youre a hiker, camper, backpacker, or outdoorsman you may find some gear and advice herein thats worthwhile. Its impossible to include every piece of gear and every consideration in the series so there might be a few omissions in the seriesI did the best I could! @SuperKyleharrison big knives have their place...deff. worth it to have. I find that i prefer a large knife 10" + over an axe in the area that I live.

nutn im 16 and your point of alot of places in canada you could be attacked by cougar and bear is acurate. in western alberta alone i can name at least 3 places it could happen easily! (waterton, crowsnest pass, and exspecially nordegg!) frigin most remote place ive ever bin!

Very true. As a Canadian backbacker I know first hand what you're talking about. My Esee Junglas saved my ass from a cougar on one of my overnight hikes. It took myself with my Junglas and my two friends with a cold steel bushman on a spear and a sk5 gurkha kukri to drive the predator away. Always be prepared.

@deathsky- a decent length knife stuck in the right place could kill a bear. if you google it ill bet you will find loads of instances were this has been the case.

a knife is NOT in any circumstances a valid tool for bear defense. Unless you live in an area with small black bears NEITHER IS A SMALL CALIBRE HANDGUN. Stab it, shoot it with something too small- forget it that bear is killing you dead-if youre real lucky youll damage it first but it will kill you its his instinct. We like and watch you cause youre reality based. So reality check- you shouldnt even suggest people carry a knife for bear.For bear country bring 12 gauge w/slugs or bearspray.
