This video is another in the series of Student Guides for Mesa Community College's Canvas Classrooms. This time, we're going to talk about Discussions.

When your instructor assigns you to post to a discussion, the link to that assignment will appear in several places. The link will appear in the task menus on the Canvas home page, in the calendar, and in the global Assignments list. Inside a course, the syllabus button will list your Discussions with your other assignments, and the links will be in the course modules, too.

Anywhere you see a discussion assignment, click on the link to go directly to the instructions, including the topic, the due date and time, and the maximum possible points if it is a graded discussion.

To add a response to the topic, click in the reply box and start typing your entry. Use the Rich Text Editor to boldface or change the font size or make other formatting changes. You can also insert web links, Or you may be able to attach images and files if your instructor has enabled this feature. Your instructor may also allow you to record audio and video for your discussion post.

When your post is ready to go, click on "Post Response" to submit your entry for others to view.

To respond to other students' entries, click on "Add a side comment," and the Rich Text Editor will open a window as before.

In the video on Canvas Notifications, we show you how to set up Canvas to notify you when someone has responded to your post or when your post has been graded.

Please have a look at the other Student Guides in this series.
