Thank goodness I live in Britain, free health care and all. As an American living in Britain, I now know the big advantage of not having to pay for health care. I work as a nurse in the NHS nad we pride ourselves in serving the needy at no cost. Sure it's got it flaws but so does US hospitals. I sympathise with my fellow Americans who could not afford health care but I DON'T sympathise with the insurance policy system. LONG LIVE NHS TRUSTS all over Britain!!!

@creamycurdy I agree, but some people run to the doctor for a cold

still I don't get why Americans think socialism = communism, its just ignorance to what it really is
police is a socialized system, firemen are socialized.
like wouldn't you be a little annoyed if you where charged for having the fire at your home put out or charged to stop a robber.

@creamycurdy we are in so much debt that it's ridiculous. we should eliminate ss and medicaid.eliminate 6000 military bases in 140 countries cut taxes, spending and regulation.Ron Paul 2012

sure the spending can be pretty bad but we dont waste it all on building new weapons.
the average cost of national health service in europe is a lot lower, than the average cost for the american private system.
but either way probably best Americans dont go national, since we get all your medical drugs, that your private system has been milking for years.

@creamycurdy and dont forget UK - Deficit spending Universal healthcare is bad

However, might I posit this? Perhaps we shouldn't look to the fed first if we want universal health care. Perhaps it would be better to push such legislation at a state level first, much like what Vermont has done recently.

After doing research, I have come to the conclusion that overall, universal healthcare is more efficient and cost effective than our current free market system. Besides, universal healthcare is not socialized as so many claim. Doctors are still private sector employees, the difference is in whom they bill. Universal healthcare guarantees care if you want it, nothing more, nothing less. Nobody is being forced to use that system, but it would be there for us none the less.

Scotland has the best healthcare. Free prescriptions and free personal care for the elderly :)

The US health care system is clunky at times, but its still the best health care for the money and arguably the best in the world. However it is true the insurance systems can get out of control at times and not just for health care.

i think apart from the fact that so many people in america dont have healthcare the main issue is accountability. public services in france and britain are held accountable for failures democratically because eveyone has invested in the services as a whole.
private systems can not be held accountable in the same way. there are no elected bodies and the hierarchy is regulated theough finance. This is the downside of all private services, not simply privatised hospitals.

Good point - Opponents of universal health care will try to tell you that private entities are "accountable to the market" and consumers. While that type of market argument may have some truth when it comes to sodas, it does not hold true in the health care field where there is often no competition (companies tell you what plan you may buy, they say what doctors you may see), and one cannot "shop around" when deathly ill.
