Dumb Question: can you use energies from old sets in official competative play?

@IncognitoLens yes, you can use any old card of the same name as a new card as long as it has the same name and text. I used these old energies in the main event!

@blazinfire582 No, it isn't legal in any tournament to use proxies. But in practice, it's good if you don't have enough cards to make multiple decks

@lynfieldpenis As somebody else noted, he played switch but I missed and just took it as retreating. That's why the switch was in the discard pile in the first place for him to reuse later in part 2.

@tth66 You can only retreat once per turn. However, using the card Switch doesn't count as one of those retreats

@Soroside The thing is, almost every major or mainstream TCG (trading card game) requires you to spend money to make a good deck. But mostly it depends on who you play against. If you play against starters such as yourself, you don't need much aside from the basic decks as they will use the same. However, against high leveled players who will have high leveled cards that only money can buy such as legendary pokemons, you pretty much have to spend more.
