U.S. Senator Jeff Bingaman focuses on two pieces of Senate business in this weeks update: unemployment insurance extension and health insurance reform. The Senate passed a 30-day, short-term extension of unemployment benefits and COBRA (optional extension of previously provided group health care benefits for workers who have lost jobs) and is now working on a long-term extension to help those impacted by unemployment in this difficult economy. Some Americans lost these benefits last Sunday because the Senate was unable to vote for passage, held up by a one-man-filibuster by the junior Republican Senator from Kentucky.
Bingaman also highlights the push for health insurance reform after President Obamas Wednesday speech. The bill referenced by the president and being debated by the House (and all across the country) has already been passed by a 60-vote supermajority in the Senate. Bingaman outlines the next steps in health care reform.
Jeff Bingaman is a realist, and a man of action, @keahi12- I agree , he does care- by exposing himself in this medium and taking the time to poignantly explain his views shows me that. He is a long term thinker but has the ability to realize the need to explain what has been done, what is being worked on, and what will hopefully happen. He unlike many of his peers is in touch with todays issues and I admire his work.
