We Pedal Powered a John Avalos rally with Rock The Bike and members of the SF bike community this morning. Avalos started out by pointing out that he's not the only mayoral candidate who pedals around the city. He may be the one most likely to bike to work if elected Mayor. He urged support of pothole-fighting, infrastructure rebuilding Prop B. His message of bringing cycling out to neighborhoods that are currently car-territory was fresh and welcome. It wasn't the most hard-hitting speech, but he put out an awesome goal for San Francisco to be America's best urban biking city.
The thing to remember is that a bike-friendly city has lots of other livable benefits for everyone. There's less noise and safety threats than a car-heavy city. A better sense of community. Lower impact on the environment. And perhaps most importantly, it sets a great example for kids. Today's rally had a huge pack of kids walk through it on their way to tour city hall.
Though we have been involved in a number of rallies, this was Rock The Bike's first time Pedal Powering a candidate's speech.
