Taft saw being President as being just a step on the road to his real ambition - being a Supreme Court justice and he became one afterward.

When Republican Warren Harding replaced Woodrow Wilson after the 1920 election, the standing army stood down and demobillised and there was what they call now "isolationism". This was continued under Calvin Coolidge in particular who succeeded Harding after his death. That kind of Republican Party was born really under the Taft Administration that replaced the progressive and interventionist Theodore Roosevelt Administration. Funny thing about Taft is that being President was not what he wanted.

The best Ron Paul quote ever:
"Let me see if i get this right, we borrow $10 billion from China, then give it to MaChara who is a military dictator and over threw a elected government. Then we go to war losing all these lives promoting democracy in Iraq". "What is going on here"?
Ron Paul is the only real conservative who votes by the constitution.

Ron Paul is not a 9/12er. He is not a mainstream Republican. There have been no GOP leaders of his type since Taft in the 1940s and 50s. Ron Paul would not want to return to 9/12, would not consider this to be a day worth reliving again and again.

But Glenn Beck doesn't believe in leaving Afghanistan, neither does the Republican Party. They also don't believe in abandoning this superpower mission. Moreover, take 9/12. Back then, government workers were praised after years of abuse... it became honourable to work for government. Surely Beck and his 9/12 crowd really don't believe in that. It seems to be an odd juxtaposition of extreme authoritarianism and no-government libertarianism. It makes no sense.
