  • Thanks. I really need to learn how to rewind that spring for I've bought 3 weedeaters now for pull cord reasons only. I always like engines of all sorts & have always looked at that little 26 cc engine thinking what else it could do. And also its design life, for a throw away engine, I'll bet it'll last longer than people have patience. Of course, souping 'em up changes things.

  • @kolbpilot

I have built engines for people that have lasted for years. The key is to mix your oil 6 to 8 oz. per gallon. Gives better protection . I actually have a 4 stroke lawnmower that I use to mow a hillside that I burn the same mix in. The engine has out lasted the mower deck. It doesn't smoke or foul plugs either .

  • How would you rate these throw away engines ? My first '94 Homelite weedeater 26 cc (USA?) ran every season for 11 years when the pull cord broke & I gave up on the recoil spring. Foolishly I threw it away. My 2nd one was very similar & this one I have after its cord broke. My latest Homelite is still a 26 cc (new weedeater) but has a made in China, low emission (lean jetted carb.) engine. I've had no problems in the 1 season I've been running the same engined blower.

  • @kolbpilot The older homelites are the best for rc use. If you up the compression , do some port work and some other tricks , you can have a great engine for little to nothing if you can do your own work on it. I have rewound many pullstarter springs . If your spring is broke , I have a spare to 2 . If it just needs rewound I can do that also.

  • @chipbreakr , whats your starter spring trick. I fight them all the time in chainsaws.

  • @tubefed420

On trimmers , I just put the notch on the spring in the slot and wind it. No trick really

  • If you were to run a nitro engine without a chassis, it'd be a total nightmare...

  • @chipbreakr Thanks for the info. I now realize my older Homelite is a 25 cc model. I ordered a Zama adjustable carb for it & the whole affair is now powering my 26 in. Huffy mountain bike. I'm impressed that a little engine like that can get my 185 lbs. (& the 45 lb. bike) up to 25 mph. My new moped but a little more versatile really.

  • @chipbreakr Must be weaker springs in the string trimmer starters. But thanks for the tip.

  • Being the airplane nut I am, I see a future for my Homelite engine swinging a small propeller for shits & grins on a static display. For now though, I'll just dream about it.
