On April 9, 2009, Mena, Arkansas, was very nearly wiped off the map by a devastating F3 tornado that took three lives, injured 22, seriously damaged countless homes, destroyed businesses and seriously rocked the economic base of the community. The face of Mena has changed as many of its long-time residents have been forced to move.
Into this depressing story come the students of Mena High School. With their EAST (Environmental and Spatial Technology) communtiy service projects they have helped to rebuild the middle school and have raised money to help homeowners rebuild their homes.
See their story here. They discuss some of their other projects as well.
Mena High School students joined hundreds of other elementary, middle and high school students on March 3 and 4, 2010, in Hot Springs, Arkansas, at the annual convention of EAST classes from eight states.
