Progress on the Proteus.

She has now run for the first time. We have done a number of starts but so far only taken her up to about 3500 rpm. Main fuel tank and some clean kerosene is next on the list and we will then bring her up to idle at 5000 rpm then a fast idle at 8500 rpm. This is as fast as we plan to run her.

Apologies for the less than perfect editing!

  • Does anyone know where I could procure some parts for the Proteus GT. We have a few bits like a spare governor actuator but I am very short of spares such as Speed Signal generator.

  • @1970jamesey The only other unit in service with similar control gear to yours is the Anstey unit. The sets at Wylfa and Oldbury have all been upgraded and I think Jonathan checked when we were talking to him a year or so back and the old parts had been disposed of. We pointed you at the Dungeness unit at the time which I think you purchased.

Have a new engine tacho generator here and several priming pumps (had two failures).

  • what fuel does this engine run on, kerosin or methan?

  • Kerosene

  • How many Liters per hour will this burn.. At what rpm?

What Hp is this old engine rated at?

    Steve

  • Service speed 11,500 rpm, 300 gallons per hour, 4,250 SHP.

  • what is it?

  • Thanks for the info semidiesel yes the engine that is in the Scunny trailer is the ex dungeness engine now. Our orignal engine is seized but we have kept it for possible future repair or as a donor. I am very happy with our progress but I am concerned about the longevity of our unit due to lack of spares. Its a credit to the original proteus engineers that we are still running a 50+ year old gas turbine, awesome !!

  • I will post a video soon to show the unit on full load, we are producing 2.2Mw during Load Managmnet Periods which means the engine could be running as much as 1.5 hours per day. We are presently consuming 220gallons of fuel oil per hour so as you can appreciate it is only cost effective for the unit to be run during the evening LMP's. The unit is capable of producing 3Mw but to prolong its life we have deloaded slightly to 2.2Mw.

  • All just for your information the Proteus Gas Turbine at Corus(now Tata Scunthorpe) is now back in service and producing electricity. I am the Ops Manager for the Central power Station and for the last few months we have been completing the good work started by others. In early Dec (just before the Load managment periods) we had our first run in two years. We had a fault with the speed signal generator and electrical wiring issue having previously swapped over our spare engine. All ok now!!!
