Chilean students have taken over schools and city streets in the largest protests the country has seen in decades.

The students are demanding free education, and an end to the privatisation of their schools and universities. The free-market based approach to education was implemented by the military dictator Augusto Pinochet in his last days in power.

The protests are causing a political crisis for Sebastian Pinera, the country's president. But what are the underlying issues driving the anger?

As the demonstrations in Chile coincide with protests erupting globally, Fault Lines follows the Chilean student movement during their fight in a country plagued by economic inequality.

EXACTLY! Oh man, I'm so sick of the USA, with it's massive Gov't and regulations. Nothing is Free, you pay for it all with your freedom.

Look at what government spokes person says,"We want to create certainty for investors that there is rule of law." I was reading Margaret Thatcher's book (The Path to Power). She clearly mentions that MAINTAINING LAW AND ORDER IS NOT MAINTAINING RULE OF LAW.

What the government is doing is clearly WRONG. If it wants to maintain rule of law, it should recognize the rights of students rather than forcing them to order.

In some demonstrations those cannons are filled with just water, but most of them are filled with water and some chemical similar to the one in the gas, so it itches, hurt and inflame.

I should add that i don't excuse US's (and Spain, UK etc) imperialism and medling in other countries' business. Chavez might actually have taken a few actions i'd agree with. He was still too anti freedom and has held Venezuela down in his way (it's sad they don't get it, if we can trust the voting record). Kicking out US oil companies that used dubious means to get ownership? GREAT! I don't need absolute knowledge; i have principles (negative rights / non aggression).

The freedom index isn't is perfect, but not useless either. I dislike neoconservatism just as much as american, so called, liberalism. Never been to the americas. I've heard living standards went up too, but that's totally missing my point (not defending what was before): I believe they went up more in Chile where they don't have the abundance of easy to extract, high priced, resources. Norway gives the same illusion through oil, but is ranked the 30th freest economy too (that explains a lot).

Just the fact that you would reference the Heritage Foundation tells me you are just another nutcase neocon towing the line....no point in talking to you because it's not your philosophy..it's your thinking that is jaded. I guess Chavez was doing such a terrible job...he was re elected how many times? lol....Have you even been to latin America? I have..and the living standards...are just fine in Venezuela....compared to what they were pre Chavez..it's not even a contest. You are a joke man.

A 100% free market (not really possible, some amount of coercion will exist) would be characterized by there not being obligations on individuals at all, except not to steal/destroy what's not theirs. The legal system should be about restitution, not punishment. People need to feel safe that they can do what they want within their means. Property rights are essential, but if people want to live in communes etc, of course they can.

    2. Allende did / wanted to nationalize a lot of stuff. He wanted central planning throughout. I believe he managed to take down at least 600 large businesses (may have seen that on the wiki page too, don't remember). en. wikipedia. org/wiki/Salvador_Allende#Presidency

Exports fell, imports rose under Allende. This was going to end badly. He didn't even have a majority vote.
