@LetFreedomRlng Socialism is a theoretical concept in America that exists only within the depths of crazy radical groups like the American Communist Party. Democrats are not remotely socialist, many (including Hillary) are center-right on (socialist is far-left; liberalism is center-left).

And as for taxes.. well there's a great irony there. It was Lincoln (R) who first introduced the federal income tax and Eisenhower (R) who had tax rates for the rich at 92% (yep, 92%). Those damn socialists!

@EndeavourLaunch JFK himself worried that Apollo was undercutting domestic programs (which was VP Mondale's concern) and even suggested, before the UN, a joint US-USSR lunar landing instead of Apollo.

@youtoobboob Probably not. If SDI had come to fruition (which it didn't...and physically couldn't have), it could well have started an arms race in LEO. In the 60s the Air Force had planned to build a military base on the Moon, to be inhabited by airmen by 1968, known as the "Lunex Project". The Army made a similar proposal in 1957, called "Project Horizon".

Well.. weapons weren't the only thing Mondale would have cut. He was the biggest critic of man spaceflight and nearly canceled the Apollo moon missions after Apollo 1. He wasn't even phased when Challenger exploded, Ronald Reagan delivered a good speech.

None of Mondale's predictions about the economy or the Cold War came true. And Reagan advocated systems of defense in space, not offense. It was a great idea because the Soviet economy and technology couldn't produce weapons in space even if they wanted to, at that time. It freaked them out, it was a good thing.
