This video was shot during rice planting in May 2011.

I met Mr. Onoda for the first time at the end of March 2011,
a few weeks after the Fukushima nuclear accident. At that time he had already decided to plant, in order to inspect the amount of radioactive substances contained in the rice. The aim of the rice planting was to gather data to decide if he would stay or leave the land after this Autumn.

Under this situation where people cannot be sure of the difference between damage caused by rumors and damage caused by radioactive substances, not only consumers, but also farmers in Fukushima are faced with a dilemma. Even if they produce, their goods may remain unsold since consumers are skeptical about safety of Fukushima produce. But if they are sold, farmers remain uneasy because they are not 100% sure about their safety. The number of suicides in Fukushima in May 2011 was 68, an increase of 19 from the previous year.

Mr.Onoda has decided to move from Fukushima. He continues to look for a rice field of 5 hectares with plenty of pure water in the Kanto, Tohoku or Hokkaido area. If you know of suitable land, please contact him.

Mr. Onoda's farm is located in Minamisoma City, Fukushima, a few kilometers away from the 30km voluntary evacuation zone. As it is outside of the zone, he cannot receive any financial support or compensation from the government or the TEPCO electric company when he evacuates.
