The Human Givens: Part 1 - Innate emotional needs

Ivan Tyrrell talks about the innate emotional needs that must be met for good mental health. The goal of all therapy should be to get these needs met as far as possible. Fortunately, nature has given us resources (see part 2) to help us get our needs met.

The emotional needs are:

1 The need to feel secure
2 To feel that we have autonomy and control
3 To give and receive attention
4 To feel emotionally connected to other people
5 To have friendships and intimacy
6 To feel connected to the wider community,
7 To feel recognised and have status within the community
8 To have the privacy to reflect and consolidate our life experiences
9 To have competencies and achievements
10 To feel we have meaning and purpose in our lives
