Arturs Irbe Carolina Hurricanes 2002 Random NHL playoff tribute thing....

Again the sound as usual is hard to hear. Not much to pick from really... I dont think there was a lot of exciting stuff going on. Irbe was just really solid per say I think. So he(and the Carolina defense)didnt give way to much excitement I guess. To bad... No insane split saves that I remember from this playoff run, or insane floppyness. Just irbe playing the angles really well, and playing very solid through out more or less... And irbe was never one for showboating with those cliche glove saves. Very calm,cool, nonchalant dude. Oh well definitely a bummer though. I do love me some split saves. shrug

Of course this was also the year of the conn smythe travesty. How irbe did not win I do not know. All I can say is, was lidstrom more valuable then irbe in the playoffs? Whats worse even saying that though, at the end of the playoffs the announcers were saying irbe wasnt even in the top 5 in votes or some bs?? WTF??? I really want to see these votes. I hope thats a lie.

Every other team that year to my knowledge was scored on at least 5 or more times.(the only other team that wasnt was phili who got knocked out first round)... And irbe was only scored on four times ONCE. Again every other team that year had at least 5 or more goals against them in a game or more. Carolina was the only team that didnt. Certainly that is a tribute to there defense per say, irbe of course as well. And seriously do we even need to compare the wings of that year ala ghetto all star team that was shooting vs irbe. Compared to what teams faced when carolina was going at them? Seriously now... Also irbe only had a handful of goals that whole playoffs scored on him that were even strength. And unless you count the goalie being pulled as even strength I thought TO never scored a single even strength goal period on irbe.

Anyway I think irbe is really underrated in general. Its sad, but irbe is usually just the butt end of jokes when hes mentioned. But how many other goalies have done what he has done for the teams he did it for? Irbe never got the chance to play on a good, let alone great team. And had the unfortunate fate of playing for some of the worst teams in the history of the NHL as well, shitting on his over all stats.

Some of those shark teams were getting a average of 37 shots or so against them a game. Ridiculous.

Oh well what can you do I guess...

At the of this video where Irbe has the rough beard I barely recognized him. As luke2388 said - today goalies do not have that style anymore and also do not where the old style masks (besides Tim Thomas... maybe that's why he's so solid in the start of this season). He was and is an awesome fella. Hopefully he will train Cap's goalies well. At least Neuvirth is really ok at the moment.

And also congrats Irbe with acceptance into the San Jose sports hall of fame.
