  • What a shame that Sun style isn't more popular! It's much more relaxing to perform than most other Tai Chi styles in my opinion.

  • You can really see the Baguazhang in it! I have never seen truly good Sun Style before.Thank you for posting this video :)

  • @peteprint Agree with you!

  • Great video. Great system. Great comments. Thanks to all concerned.

There are two Sun Styles. The original Sun 97 sequence devised by Sun Lutang and a 73 sequence devised by a Wu Shu committee for competition in the first Asian games.

The latter is more athletic and standardised to suit those that want to compete for medals, and the former is more suited to people who just do Tai Chi for health.

The 97 has a short 42 and 13. The 73 has a 38 and a 13 designed by Faye Yip’s father who was a member of the Wu Shu committee.

  • @Far7anR The Sun style long form is shorter and more direct than other styles so it's easy to learn the full sequence. I think it's only 72 or 76 postures rather than the 108 postures of the Yang long form.

I don't know about learning any tai chi from a DVD. There are subtleties to tai chi that require an instructor to develop properly. But if you're already learning another style from a good instructor, you can easily apply the principles to Sun style to learn the form from a DVD.

  • @Hikikomori013

In your opinion, how easy is it to learn the full form from DVD? Why is it easier than other styles?

  • you're right! inside, there are some ba gua, hsing yi part, a little style yan Chen also and therefore more focused on the fight!

  • Sun Tai chi is one of my favorites. I have the vcd by Sun Jian Yun.

The Sun family also has a shorter simplified form, but the full form is so easy to learn that they stopped teaching the short form.

  • I second that! I've learned both the Yang and Sun style short forms and I have to say that I prefer Sun because it has elements from the other styles in it; it makes it more diversified and therefore easier to translate from form to application because you can adapt it more easily to any combat scenario.

  • Very good form! I agree with Vlad in that it's a shame this style of Tai Chi isn't more widespread. I like how it has the Xingyi and Bagua elements in it.

  • I have Master Faye's video and am about 3/4 of the way through learning the 38 step form. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in learning the Sun style of Tai Chi Chuan.
