The Newbeats recorded their version of the song popularized by Dick and Dee Dee the same year (1964) but didn't release the song on a single until five years later in the summer of 1969. "Thou Shalt Not Steal" by the Newbeats struggled on the Bubbling Under chart, never managing to climb above #128. By the way, if you share my philosophy, "never grow up, never grow old," come on over to my blog, Shady Dell Music & Memories at www.shadydell.blogspot.com. See you there!

  • The drummer on this cut is really good . . keeps the groove going. The lead guitarist is fun too.

  • @mitchflorida This rendition of "Steal" grew on me in recent years and I always enjoy listening to it. For some reason the Newbeats' sound always refreshes and invigorates me. There's nothing false about Larry's Falsetto. Thanks for your comment, Mitch!

  • Did Lou Christie ever cover this song?

  • @njva17420 Perhaps in the shower but the All Music Guide doesn't list any recorded version by Lou. I agree that his voice would have been perfect for the song. Thanks for your comment, my friend!

  • The sound quality is great! Too bad this song didn't chart.

The Newbeats should have released this tune in 1965-66, the height of their popularity.

  • I agree. Trying to put this song on the charts to compete against Iron Butterfly, Steppenwolf and the like doesn't seem like a good plan. Thanks for your comment!

  • Regardless of whether this song was done by Dick & Dee Dee or the Newbeats, I find it really shrill and hard to take.

  • I always loved this by Dick and Dee Dee, but the Newbeats version is better. Larry Henley is incredible!

  • As good as Dick & Dee Dee. Thanks for posting it.

  • @the originalbadbob--the Stones first played San Bernardino June 5/64.

  • @mitchflorida Speaking of the Stones, where did they play their very first gig in the U.S.? I've asked this question on a Stones video and got one reply. The guess was Lynn, Mass. I told that person, "Wrong coast. Try again." Maybe someone who appreciates great music like this, by the Newbeats, will be able to answer the question correctly.

  • The Newbeats opened for the Rolling Stones on their 1965 American and 1966 European tours.
