Carter shows off his signing abilities. His mommy is a sign language interpreter, so even though everyone in our family is hearing, we all know a few signs. Carter is about 18 months old. (Feb. 25, 2009)
List of signs:
-- please
-- ball
-- book (clapping his hands together)
-- brush teeth (pointing inside mouth)
-- puppy dog (patting/rubbing tummy -- one of the first signs he learned -- there are a lot of children's books with puppies in them, and he signs "puppy" every time he sees one ... or almost any animal, for that matter )
-- kitty cat (First he looks around behind him to where the cat is. Then, after daddy turns him around, he signs it by pointing inside mouth. Okay, that looks pretty similar to the sign for "brush teeth," but as any parent knows, we understand our children as they are learning to speak not by how clearly they say or sign a word, but by hearing or seeing the same word or sign repeatedly in context. And even if they use the same sound or sign in multiple situations, we understand what they are saying by context.)
-- banana
-- cracker
-- pray
-- amen
-- head
(At this point, Carter goes rogue and starts showing us his feet for every sign mommy asks for.)
-- cookie
-- bath
-- night night (foot!)
-- book
-- thirsty
(Now the acrobatics begin in earnest!)
-- foot
