Serbian contralto Marijana Mijanović singing Penelope's aria Illustratevi, O Cieli! followed by a love duet with her husband, tenor Krešimir Špicer (Ulisse), Sospirato Mio Sole which concludes Claudio Monteverdi's penultimate opera Il Ritorno d'Ulisse in Patria. This performance was filmed in Théâtre de Jeu de Paume, Aix-en-Provence, France in 2002 with Les Arts Florissants conduced by William Christie. Penelope was Mijanović's breaktrough role and really put her into the spotlight as one of the best interpreters of baroque music of our time. Recording of Handel's Giulio Cesare under Minkowski and a solo CD of Senesino arias followed which definitely cemented her status.

  • Who says Serbians and Croatians don't go together...

  • My thoughts exactly... :)

  • After all, the outcome would be so exciting if Minkowski and Mijanovic collaborated Marijana's second solo album. She's a top notch Baroque solist, but even though Baroque music is my favorite by far I'd kill to hear her perform Brahms' "Vier ernste Gesänge". Baroque or Romantic, her second solo album is eagerly expected. Keep the excellent work lady, your avant-garde singing and outstanding acting are making you a living legend.

  • Hmmm, yes, Minkowski and Marijana working together again, now that would be a treat. Imagine say Nisi Dominus at Minko's tempo. :) Although I myself also have a fantasy and that is a recital of some lesser-known baroque composers like Porpora or Jommelli. I would die to hear her sing O Più Tremar Non Voglio from Jommelli's Demofoonte. :) Still, if she plans to hit a broader market, I doubt it that she will do anything of that kind soon...

  • Can't stop watching this miracle of MM's breakthrough. What an amount of passion!!

Again thanks for THIS vid,I wouldn't have known it.I used to find the 2 late Monteverdi operas a bit lengty, but they do have these very special moments.

MM said last month in an interview that Minkowski called her after seeing this prod. and asked for an audition for G.Cesare the next(!) day.Never mind that she didn't know the role nor had seen the scores. And well, immediately engaged her...the rest is history.

  • Well, one couldn't expect less from the greatest conductor who ever lived. The man knows his business. :) And believe me, I'm the one to find Monteverdi's operas a bit dull, but this one, hm, I actually managed to watch the whole thing in one go. One rarely sees such magnificent acting and singing.

  • Perhaps the greatest finale in opera with its 4 part structure.

  • It's a very pure and light tone, nothing like other contraltos I've heard... don't know why people call her a contralto, what is her range?

  • This performance is on DVD! try amazon, or Opus Arte...it's so amazing

  • hello Stefan?

Thank You for this video exeptional beauty.

I saw it somewhere on Youtube and I thought it to be the best Monteverdi's performance ever.

Where can I find the rest of it?

  • Hello Stefan!

Some time ago I have found a fragment of this performance somwhere on Youtube, and I thought this was the best interpretation of Monteverdi's opera I ever saw. After some time I still think the same, and I only wish to see more of it. Where can I find it?

    Thank You!

    Małgorzata
