just wanted to thank you for the video tutorial and @swingboy post. Those 2 together helped me remove and replace my starter today. It's the holidays and I really don't have the $ to spend on going to a mechanic. Instead I found this vid and did it myself. I've only changed my oil a few times nothing else. I'm grateful for this vid and appreciate you giving this knowledge cause if I went to a mechanic I would have been treated like a dummy and made to pay for it.Thanks again

If the starter was simply not working (as opposed to grinding or locked up), you probably could have saved another hundred bucks. My last one merely needed new brushes...less than $20. I have seen this model starter strip its gears, though.

Respond to this video...PS, I did remove the battery, but not the cooling reservoir.

I also unplugged the black computer thing instead of removing it. And I did not bother separating the metal part that the black "accordion thing" was attached to on it's right side (intake bellows and the air cleaner housing?). I took both of those off as one unit.

I don't know the proper vocabulary. :) Not a hard job

A rebuilt starter was ~$145 after a$47 discount for returning the old starter.

Agree this took less time than the video said and I also skipped some steps. however it did take me about 1.5 hours to remove and replace the starter.

I am NOT into fixing cars although I am an electrician and feel comfortable using tools.

Overall, an excellent video and your tips fill in the gap -thanks go to you and the original poster!

I replaced the starter without much mech experience in about 1.5 hours. I am an electrician so I'm comfy with tools though.

@2:35 I didn't remove water tank -not necessary to do.

@3:33 I unplugged the cable plug on the side rather than unscrewing the black computer cap.

@4:00 I removed tube on the opposite end (close to the 'accordion'); easier for me.

@4:25 I saved time by not disconnecting this junction; I removed the whole piece together (plastic box & 'accordion').

Things not mentioned: the very small nut on the end of the starter, which is basically a wire clip I didn't have a wrench small enough (8mm?) so had to use pliers. Unplug the solenoid wire by pushing its release clip, then sliding the connector out of the base to release the clip itself.
