"Who's winning?" Jaime wondered, putting his golf ball down at the beginning of the tenth hole.
Aiden stared at him. "You wanted me to keep score?"
"Uh, yeah?"
Sam laughed. "No worries, I did."
"So, who's winning?"
Sam looked down at the paper. "Uh, Aiden—No, Jaime...no, Nathan—" He looked back up at Jaime. "I don't know how to read this."
"Come on, bro." Aiden put his hand on Jaime's shoulder. "Can we go ONE day without being so competitive? We've been doing a good job so far. Besides, you dont want to get us kicked out of HERE, too, do you?"
"It wasn't my fault that we were kicked out of those other places," Jaime protested.
"Jay." Sam laughed. "You screamed at an old lady."
"So?"
Sam rolled his eyes. "And the time before that, you broke one of their golf clubs."
"Yeah," Aiden spoke up, "we're STILL not sure how you managed that one."
"And the time before THAT—" Sam continued.
"All right, I get it. No competitions today." Jaime crossed his heart. "Promise."
With the girls:
"Mm, this chicken sandwich is delish!" Melanie declared. She looked at her friends. "Oh...did you want some?"
Deanna and Emilee held up their hands. "We're good."
Melanie shrugged, taking another bite from her sandwich. She looked at Kimberlee. "Are you okay, Kimberlee?" she asked around a mouthful of food.
"Huh?" Kimberlee glanced at Melanie. "Oh, yeah. Yeah, I'm fine." She looked back down at her food.
Melanie dropped her sandwich and looked at Kimberlee once more. "No, you're not. I can tell. What's up?"
Kimberlee sighed. "Just thinking about those...people."
"What about them?"
"What if you're right? What if they really ARE my parents?"
"Well, what was your first reaction when they told you that they were your parents?" Deanna chimed in.
"Honestly? Fear. But that can't be right...can it? Why would I be afraid of my own parents?" Kimberlee put her head in her hands. "God, this is so frustrating!"
Melanie moved over to Kimberlee, rubbing her back. "It's all right, Kimberlee. We'll get through this. I promise. Together."
Kimberlee smiled up at Melanie. "Thank you."
"Don't thank me." Melanie smiled, too. "It's what I do."
"All right, new topic!" Emilee spoke up. She turned to Deanna. "What kind of a wedding do you want, Dee?"
"Honestly, I've always dreamt of having a wedding on the beach at sunset." Deanna smiled. "After all, that was where Aiden and I had our first kiss."
Her friends looked at each other. "That is so romantic!" they exclaimed.
Deanna smiled, still thinking about their first kiss.
"But I don't care, Deanna continued. "We could get married in Aiden's backyard on the coldest day in January, or the hottest day in August, and I wouldn't care. All that matters is that I'm with the person I love, the person I want to spend the rest of my life with. And I've found him."
"Aw," Melanie said. "That is too sweet. Aiden sure is lucky."
"No." Deanna shook her head. "I'm the lucky one."
