@nickellicker Sorry, but it was actually a mix of animatronic, suit with forced perspective, and cg. I and my coworkers at ILM spent many months perfecting the look of dynamic fur in the truck chase sequence and the closing shot of the film. Dreamquest also did some cg shots of Joe when he's in LA. The good old days when vfx were still a mix of practical and cg.

@GojiGuy Mighty Joe Young (1998) was not computer animated. The gorilla design was created by Rick Baker (look up his credits on Wikipedia, it's astounding), and John Alexander wore the costume and performed the stunts.
