Closing Tent City

On September 15, 2007, the Province of Alberta shut down "Tent City," an empty lot that was used as a campground over the summer by the homeless in Edmonton. Here is a look at that final day.

And panhanlers really piss me off, Calgary Trail and 23rd, young guys who can work, young ladies who can work. Instead sit there all day with a fucking sign saying give me money for nothing. Go work on the rigs, 5500 a month take home and Im not complaining. I pay 15000 last year in tax for these assholes to sit on thier asses.

Why do you assume everyone down on their luck is a panhandler? That's kind of a stereotype.

I have absolutely no sympathy for these people, this is a capitalist society and either you comply or you go without. "Sleeping in apartments" I left a friends apartment and there were two homeless people in the foyer passed out and reeking of puke. Booze is what most of these people had chosen and it ruined thier lives, not my fault and not yours. Go to AA better yourself.

My question... why on this lovely sunny day mid afternoon are these people sitting around bitching... it would be a hell of a lot more effective if they were pro-active about there situation. "Gimmie gimmie..."

Several of them did not want to leave right away. They were upset about being separated from their loved ones.

In response to one of your previous comments, many of these people do work -- ten buck and hour temp jobs are not enough to pay rent in this city.

We need to bring back manufacturing and assembly back into America as China has robbed us of our US jobs. I am an assembly worker as there are not too many assembly jobs any more. I thank God for my mother who has helped me during my difficult times.

@mukkmuk um when this place shut down it was seriously close to a soup kitchen and a drop in centre. I walked by that place every day since it opened cuz it was on my way to where I was going. Everyone seemed so happy that they had a place to call home. After they shut it down the shelters where over filled.

O know these people and the circumsatances are individulistic....Hence the opinions about these people are to each their own I have spent time in the street as well and I know it take sum real doing to get off the street and the opportunities are few and far between to get a place for what welfare offers you...hmmmm 380 a month you tell me could you dew it..probably not

I say we need to roundup every single illegal immigrant and ship their asses right back to where they came and pass laws making it a jailable offense to house, feed, employee, provide benefits to educational or otherwise any illegal immigrant which should include their anchor babies as well!

There are times that I feel so depressed about our current crisis that I wish I were dead. As a former Marine WE NEVER GIVE UP. I was very angry and depressed that when I became sick and tired that the system seemed to question me more than the lazy crack asses who have been playing the system FOR YEARS. Imagine illegal aliens receiving free benefits WITHOUT question and Veterans of this country being looked upon as a someone trying to get over the system.
