that might be a mertens' water monitor, they are considerably smaller than the asian/malayan water monitors, and look a little different

that actually might be a "black dragon". at least i believe that is the common term for them, as far as i could see the markings were the same and they are close relatives to the water monitor if im not mistaken. but a different species none the less. if this is so, this was a rare sight from what i have heard. But this was definitely not a Asian water monitor, nor a water monitor which there is a difference in markings and temperament. i own an asian water monitor personally.

I looked it up and found a number of sites calling it a Malayan Water Monitor... it does look at bit different from the Asian water monitors...
