  • Liver biopsy confirms the diagnosis and shows lymphocytic and plasma cell infiltrates often with granuloma formation.

    At a later stage, there is portal tract fibrosis and cirrhosis.

  • Ninety percent of patients with primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) are women present in their fifth decade. Aetiology is unknown.

    The pruritis precedes the jaundice.

    PBC is associated with

    Sjogren's syndrome

    Polyarthralgia

    Autoimmune thyroiditis

    Hypercholesterolaemia.

    Keratoconjunctivitis sicca is present in 70% of cases.

    Serum antimitochondrial antibodies are usually positive.

  • My Husband has recently been diagnosed with Hep C & stage 4 cirrhosis of his liver. His doctor has prescribed Alpha Interferon & Rabivarin treatments. He also is a type 2 diabetic. He is 60 years old. I would like to know if there are any new treatments for this condition as it appears to be extremely harsh and does not show a high percentage of a positive outcome. Can you please help?

  • @saiedz Unless she was jaundiced it is likely that they didn't consider liver disease as a factor.

  • @XxNAZOx There is no cure, there is only management. A liver transplant is an option for liver failure, but it may reoccur in the new liver. There is a group on facebook for PBC patients.

  • how could the dermatologist miss pbc as a differential for pruritis???
