Some eye candy improvements for Kubuntu boot process.

If someone is interested how do i do that, here is brief description:
I use Kubuntu 7.10 with kernel version 2.6.22.
First step, i replaced default Grub loader by GfxBoot (here is link how to do that http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=208855). I also use my own theme which is based on this theme http://kde-look.org/content/show.php/KDE+4+gfxboot+theme?content=75443 . You can find my modified theme here: http://mirrecc.hostrator.com/kubuntu/Blue_Tux_Theme.tar.gz .
Second step was a little bit harder. It was replacing the default usplash by fbsplash, which allows pretty boot process with background image in terminal. But it requires find appropriate kernel patches, apply them, and then compile kernel. And this process may differ for various kernel versions as well as for various linux distributions. So i put here only some links which was useful for me, and which can help you to start, but rest is up to you: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=178439 , http://jeandamiendurand.free.fr/debian/splashutils/ , http://dev.gentoo.org/~spock/projects/fbcondecor/ .
And the last part of boot process is starting kde with kde splash screen. I modified splash screen from original Kubuntu O2 theme. You can find my modified kde splash screen here: http://mirrecc.hostrator.com/kubuntu/KubuntuPanther.tar.gz

I think that's all,
so good luck with your eye candy system improvements :-)

  • Could you tell me your kernel options?

I'm doing the same thing on debian witch all the ubuntu distros are based on.

I have the splash working, but I would like to have it enabled even earlier.

I also have some flashing and bleed trough.
