"Chicago audiences have proven time and again that they will applaud anybody on stage, no matter how bad the performance. . . . "
Wait, now have you've seen countless Lyric performances over the years? You better have to make such a statement. The rest of your rant is a strawman. Visit NYC, Boston and the general audience would probably clap for the same cast. Love the measures some people take to bash the Midwest. And where do you live that's full of sophistication?

"At least we have good taste. But, after all, this is the Mid-West, and what can you expect? Not exactly the center of the sophisticated world, is it?"
That comment is not only offensive but downright ignorant. You judge an entire region, and city, based on their applause of opera singers? I smell bitterness. Sorry to say you're not that insightful nor intelligent, or even "sophisticated." For from it.

@LeNozze44 Agree wholeheartedly. If a singer is attractive and media-friendly (like Garanca) all the better, but marketing seems to have taken over.

I heard the Saturday afternoon performance, and Hampson was in terrible voice, straining and off key. His voice does not fit Macbeth. At. All.

Chicago audiences have proven time and again that they will applaud anybody on stage, no matter how bad the performance. I guess they're just trying to be respectful. Either that, or they just have bad taste and cannot distinguish one singer from another. The Italians in Italy would be booing when a singer's performance was particularly bad. At least we have good taste. But, after all, this is the Mid-West, and what can you expect? Not exactly the center of the sophisticated world, is it?
