Hoagy always recruited the best musicians for his recordings including Bix Beiderbecke, Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey, Bud Freeman,Benny Goodman,Gene krupa, Eddie Lang, Jack Teagarden and many others.

  • NEVER KNEW TILL NOW that actual recordings existed of the grandfather I never knew, but heard so much about (Elvan "Fuzzy" Combs). Just a shame his name was misspelled so often (Evan instead of Elvan, Coombs or Comb instead of Combs). Makes it harder to research him.

Thank you so much for uploading this recording.

  • @cre8ivpoet1

    You're most welcome!

  • Hoagy recorded One Morning In May in Chicago on Oct 10, 1933. He's playing piano and we also hear Elvan 'Fuzzy' Coombs on alto sax and clarinet, Fred Murray trumpet, Kenny Porter guitar, Jim Johnston string bass, Andy van Sieckle drums.

  • @JohnnnyW

I thank you for that clarification. My reference to musicians were those who Hoagy had

recruited on past recordings, I personally did not have the mames of the crew on this recording I merely enjoyed the number.

    Thanks again.

  • Great recording. But sadly, Bix was already gone two years when it was recorded.

  • @everybodylovesmybaby

You are correct, Bix obviously did not play on this particular number and I am not sure who did, I don't have the record. But, those mentioned, I believe, had played with Hoagy more as a studio group than an organized orchestra.

  • Thanks for that info. I got the list of musicians from Brian Rust's jazz book but had not heard of any of them!

  • @JohnnnyW One interesting detail about this record is that all the musicians, Hoagy included, are former members of Kappa Sigma fraternity at Indiana University, Hoagy's alma mater. At one point, the fraternity housed two competing jazz bands. And one of it's guests was Bix Biederbecke. Must have been a swingin' place!
