Louise Halestrap uses the smallest amount of petrol possible to get around mid-Wales. She is a distance learning tutor for the University of East London, who spent her career studying almost everything decomposing, from dead fish and abattoir waste, antibiotics produced in eggs, headache pills, nappies, TNT and pesticides in the soil, sewage, household waste... She has worked in Organics Research and Development for a radical Cleanstream recycling (source separation) company- that plan to extract the 'wealth from waste' in Ceredigion. During her 7 years at the Centre for Alternative Technology in Machynlleth she led the consultancy services on solid waste management and water treatment, conservation and recycling, managed the composting and sanitation research programmes including: live testing of home composting as a waste minimisation strategy; social factors involving householder participation in composting, ran specialist courses on Composting and Sewage Solutions and lectured to a wide range of students. Prior to her work with CAT Louise was Director of Research for a commercial composting company and a research scientist in the large scale composting sector. She has been Chair of Cylch (the Wales Community Recycling Network), adviser to the Composting sub-group at the National Assembly in Cardiff and the on steering group for the Powys Zero Waste.
