The R.J. Reynolds Forest Aviary at the North Carolina Zoo is recognized as one of the best natural habitat exhibits in the United States. Equally impressive is the zoo's work in breeding rare and exotic birds. An important achievement in this area was the recent birth of a Golden White-eye--the first such birth recorded in the United States. This bird is critically endangered on its native island of Saipan, due primarily to the impacts of the non-native brown tree snake. There are only 40 Golden White-eyes in the United States, with four of them at the North Carolina Zoo.
