Giving a big middle finger salute to all the naysayers who said the ZX Spectrum couldn't do big, bright colourful games, Turrican was one of the hits of the 1990. Featuring massive scrolling worlds full of colour and hundreds of idiot enemies to kill, Turrican is still a much loved game even now.

There's a bit of a video encoding problem in the video (a strange black line), and I do have a bit of a go at C64 owners, but it's all in good fun. And yes, their version of Turrican is bloody good too (well a lot better really). But all said and done, Turrican is a triumphant bit of programming. Now if only the sequel wasn't so shite.....

  • Wow. This is actually a pretty gorgeous game. I didn't think the Spectrum was capable of this.

  • Yea it is nice in the graphics department. Obviously doesn't have the scrolling speed of the C64 version, but it has its own charms. The David Berry games: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Tintin on the Moon, Dan Dare 3, Savage, Extreme, Smash TV etc are more examples of really nice colourful games on the machine.

  • its been said a million times but i say it again. i prefered C64 for graphics and sound/music. but for playability and a kind of 'spirit' all of its own the spectrum wins. which is best? id say neither. both worked well in their own way.

  • Ergh...

This is a porting disaster. the Speccy was definately capable of better, although a game like Turry was just out of it's league.

  • no c64 owner ever said anything to me, maybe because they were in the minority at my school

  • why does he have mismatched colour boots?

  • A shame there was no MSX version of this !

  • It is a good little port, even if the sound's not up to much. And I wonder how many Speccy owners went on to buy Macs...

  • there was a turrican for genesis that had great game play, but w/ graphics that had a little bit 2 b desired. Now for ZX this is pretty good!

  • Ever tried the Amstrad CPC port of Turrican? Pretty much the same as the Spectrum but much more colourful, oh and of course no colour clash.

  • @tomscholes Turrican 2 on the Speccy was a total pece of junk man!! The controls are horrible, our Turrican is not colorful, it doesn't sound much better than this one even with a soundchip and there are many many other things that are wrong with Turrican II for the Speccy. The only good thing is that it told you to rewind, stop and play the tape.

  • Spectrum was an awesome machine that sometimes did plenty of of stuff C64 had trouble with

C64 was awesome too and pretty much did wank over the Speccy in lots of ways

I loved them both and i'm highly respectful of this great time and memories it now provides

Makes me laugh when people still slag on these great machine like their lives depend on doing so

In truth the Spectrum was a bit shite in a few crucial areas but it remains one of the most charming machines of our time

  • EXTREMELY inept reviews but strangely compelling! :)

  • Turrican 2 on the Speccy was far better... In fact Turrican 1 was never much good on any machine if I remember correctly..
