@kschiavo you seem to forget about little details like self preservation instincts, fear of death, high risk of permanent mutilation in case of failure and extreme pain.
if commiting suicide was any easy there would be suiciders left and right, imagine there was no pain or fear of death - nobody would bother with life.

so, three guys had a quick death in a fragment of a second while the fourth guy survived, had probably his legs crushed and will enjoy being the slave for society for several more decades with added bonus of aging and slowly turning to a zombie.
looks like I wont bother with seatbelts anymore...
