This is me singing Butterfly, by Mia Makaroff, as performed by Rajaton and recorded on their 2001 album Boundless. I sang the 6 parts a cappella (with no instruments), and recorded the videos. Sorry about the tuning and timing in a couple places - I didn't have time to record many takes (next time, maybe...)

Other info:

I edited and mixed the audio with some reverb and EQ, but without compression or pitch-correction.

Equipment: Thinkpad Laptop, M-Audio Luna microphone, Tascam US 122-L audio interface, Cubase LE4 recording/editing/mixing software, Canon Powershot 640 camera, Corel VideoStudio 12

Sheet Music: Purchased from Sulasol, a finnish music publisher (www.sulasol.fi)

About Rajaton: they are a 6-singer a cappella group from Helsinki, Finland. I consider them to be the best musical group of any kind. for more info, go to their official website (www.rajaton.net) and the Rajaton Fan Club (http://rajatonfanclub.awardspace.com). You can buy their albums directly from their website, or in North America from http://www.a-cappella.com.

About me: I'm a 19-year-old student from Toronto, Canada, studying Business and Engineering in Philadelphia. I sing in the a cappella group Dischord (http://www.upenndischord.com), and I sang in the Toronto Children's Chorus.

  • wow, you are the greatest person ever

  • @srry4beatinu Haha - wow. Thanks!

Also, I like your reason for needing to learn Finnish!

  • nice one, Mia Makaroff is my mother btw (:

  • @Flokked Wow, well I wasn't expecting that! Armottoman osa is definitely my better recording of a song she wrote. Oh, and I just downloaded The Lament from Rajaton's new album.

  • your falsetto is extremely impressive.

have you ever considered re-recording this with lauren singing the soprano/alto parts?

  • @zoomyzoomy123 Thanks! My falsetto tuning is definitely better in my most recent video. I don't know if I'll ever get around to rerecording Butterfly, but I'll be including Lauren on some future multitrack videos!

  • Nice job! Might you have a cappella sheet music for "Dobbin's Flowery Vale" or know where I can purchase it? Thanks!

    Kathryn

  • you rock.

  • Great job, especially on baritone! What part do you usually sing?

  • Like others also said, you should sing this with Lauren, (because) The Tune-part doesnt entirely lie well on you range (i dont know if that is the right way to say what I mean, cause I'm not a native speaker in English, as I'm from the Netherlands)

  • oh boy. you are legit the coolest person i know!!! :D

  • This was very helpful. I am singing the soprano for this!

  • this is beautiful and touching and awesome. I have no clue how anyone can dislike this piece of art
