I do agree but Sonnet 18 actually makes fun of the italian renaisannce sonnets more than this sonnet. I believe this sonnet is more sincere than the other one.
It's interesting. The majority of the sonnets, I believe, are to a male friend. Some modern critics interpret this as homosexual, but I take it as an hetrosexual, male frienship and nothing more. It is an intimate male friendhip, and nothing more.
Is there any idea who this ugly lady might be? Have critics made any guesses?

What is interesting is the fact that Shakespeare wouldn't dare discribe his true love (see sonnets 1-126) with such jocularity.
I doubt the poem is so much about his love than it is a satire on tired conventions.

i've been doing Shakespeare in university and i would say this is my favourite sonnet too. Such a contrasting character!
