A fire in a storage facility Wednesday morning at the Sunrise Poultry Processors facility in Surrey turned into a major blaze.

The fire at the facility, which is located at 73rd Avenue and 135th Street in Newton, was called in at 5:34 a.m.

By 6 a.m., it had turned into a three-alarm fire that required 40 firefighters, according to Surrey deputy fire chief Jim Bond.

The fire was extinguished before 10 a.m., although firefighters remained on the scene to ensure there were no flare-ups.

Bond said the cause of the fire has not been determined, although it was not suspicious.

The wood-frame storage facility was badly damaged but the adjoining machine shop escaped relatively unscathed.

  • i am assuming surrey fd is in the process of phasing out the lime green apparatus. Ya that green was an idea that shouldn't have gotten passed the 'hey chief I got a great idea' stage.
