The Ball is football's equivalent to the Olympic Torch; a legendary football and the star of the beautiful game. Every four years, it kicks off from its "Mount Olympus", Battersea Park in London, where the very first game of modern rules football took place. Its destination is the Opening Ceremony of the World Cup.
The route of The Ball 2006 to Munich was, of course, much shorter than the epic 2002 journey to Korea and Japan, but gave us the chance to look at some events in the history of football - the Christmas Truce game in Ypres and the location of the first game in Germany. The Ball was also a guest of honour at an EU YOUTH exchange called "With a Spirit of Football" and also at a 24 hour Football Against Racism Marathon.
Visit the Spirit of Football website at http://www.spiritoffootball.com to find out more about the previous journeys of The Ball, and discover our plans for the epic trip to South Africa in 2010. If you live in Africa and want to take part, please get in touch!
