In recent weeks, China has been showing off its first high speed trains - the beginning of a network Beijing hopes symbolises its spectacular transition from third world state to economic superpower.
But at the weekend there was a train crash south of Shanghai, which not only killed dozens of passengers, but also undermined China's proud boasts.
Families of the victims are accusing the authorities of intimidation and cover-up, and even the normally docile state media have criticised the official response as a public relations disaster.
