Depending on the size and speed of the train, a train can take several miles to reach a complete stop. That is because of INERTIA! An object at rest will stay at rest, an object in motion will stay in motion. And the more massive the object is, the higher the inertia is, which means it will take more force to accelerate and halt said object.
Plus, didn't you even hear the brakes screeching the entire time?!
