this is kind of similar to what happens in car engines and why a bigger diameter exhaust pipe is usually a bad idea for a NA [not turbo] engine.

... Just came in from the garage after experimenting with our new Ruben's Tube. Did you use Latex over both ends or just the one where the speaker joins? Also, what is the diameter of the pipe you used?
I also agree this is the best 'Tube' on YouTube!

I had a few questions. was this played as mono or L&R into one speaker and how in God's name did u get it to look so clean? Was it spacing, number of bands, or amount of propane? And do you use this at parties, because that's essentially what I want to do, but I thought using a random number of bands other than 16 or 32 or too many might make the flames look sloppy. I want flames like your's. They're like perfect little birthday candles. Hooray! please let me know.

Well, a few things. For one, ours was not fueled by a small propane tank, but through our lab's propane. Perhaps it was higher pressure, then? Also, we had a fairly large tube, compared to how the flames were (without music). This left enough gas to keep even the highest flames pressurized. We also tweaked the flow of gas with the valve until they looked nice and clean. Oh, and we just held a stereo up to our membrane(a balloon), so we didn't have mono sound. Hope that helps!

You mention you put a diaphram over the end. Does this make it significantly better over having a hard end?

Yes, using a flexible material such as a balloon helps amplify the sound waves, whereas having a hard end would dampen them.

You have a tube hooked up to one end to some sort of flammable gas(ie, propane) and a row of holes drilled on the top. Then, on the other side of the tube, you put some kind of membrane(like a balloon) and stretch it across. Placing a speaker next to that transmits the soundwaves through the gas, and voila!
