The sun wont even fuse iron or ever get to that. The sun isnt big enough ie not hot enough to fuse iron, if you dont believe me go to: /watch?v=iauIP8swfBY
Respond to this video... people are misunderstanding this. You cant kill the sun by jamming iron into it. Stars die when they naturally fuse heavier and heavier elements that end with iron which is too stable to fuse so fusion stops completely. Simply jamming iron into a star will just piss it off and absorb some of its energy.
@mahadismom Actually our sun is bound to no such fate. This video neglects the discrepancy between supermassive stars and our universally small sun. Our sun can only fuse hydrogen into helium, nothing more. Only the largest starts can fuse heavier and heavier elements until they try iron and it kills them.
if i understand correctly, the sun has to be at that point where the core is almost out of fuel. then once it starts to make it's own iron, it dies in seconds. it would probably need a chunk of iron almost as big as its core to kill it before that.
@gotaweb No, it isn't a question of 'seeding' the sun with a little iron. A substantial fraction of the suns mass must be on the point of turning to iron, as I understand.
@BrandonFound
Our sun will actually be able to fuse some of its helium into carbon, but after that, yeah it's finished.

So how many stars had to die to make each of us live?

Damn, and to think that iron is one of the many substances we need to live
