My friend Jim at Amtrak called me this morning and told me that there was a special train headed our way from Kansas City. Amtrak's Road# 166 leading, and Road# 88 trailing brought a consist of 9 assorted coaches and dome cars to Topeka to be dropped at the BNSF Shops. The first coach was Caritas, followed by: Pullman, "Northern Sky Dome" and "Northern Dream" of Northern Sky Charters. Next "Sierra Hotel Dome." Then Louisville and Nashville's "Oliver Hazard Perry," Southeran Pacific Coach, and Last the Chesapeake and Ohio's "Chapel Hill."They were "hauling the mail" so to speak when they went by me. It was a really interesting train to see, and I thought that I might share it with you! Incidentally; using my speed calculation formula, they were pushing 85 when they passed me. That formula is: # of cars including engines multiplied by 85. Then divide that # by the amount of seconds it takes the train to pass you. Then you multiply that # by 60. Then you multiply that # by 60 once more. Then you divide that # by 5280. This train took 7.5 seconds to pass. There's today's math lesson. And to the Engineer...If you read this....THANKS for the great K5LA Concert you gave us! ..... Thanks for watching.....Doc.
Amazing approach shot!
This must have been the AAPRCO train. I shot video of this AAPRCO train in year 2008 when it was pulled by a steam engine down the California Coast. Vid is on my youtube account.
