Keeping agriculture sustainable increasingly means keeping it local. Besides the environmental benefit of reducing reliance on fossil-fuel guzzling transportation, eating local food is a more seasonal and often healthier experience. With concern about food security growing, it might turn out to be safer, too. The folks in charge of the Science Barge, a new urban farming experiment in New York, are bringing local food production closer than ever. In this video Vanessa Rae learns about the floating greenhouse facility, which is designed as a demonstration of how urban space, especially rooftop space in big cities like New York, can be used to efficiently produce food. Self-powered by solar panels, wind turbines, and a biodiesel generator, the Science Barge uses state of the art computer technology and an agricultural technique called hydroponics to grow fruits and veggies using much less water and space than field farming. Watch out, city slickers. Farm country is coming to your neighborhood.

Recirculating deep water culture in a closed system is way beter than nft. Nft causes to much water evaporation .

This concept overlooks a very important hurdle that must be passed first: It is currently illegal for residents to use their rooftops by NYC law.

The world as I see it right now is divided between the media world with all its evilness and disasters and the other world of young, benign, canny and balanced humans that will inherit the world. It is foul to say that those addicted to their work and their computer gizmoes should be ignored and left behind. As a man who once taught adults, I can rightfully say, that every-one! can be freed from aforementioned shackles and made to see his or her true potential as a benefactor for this world.

It's really not that complicated. You don't need the tech they use that analyzes the weather. A bit of trial and error involved but the hydro system will pay for itself in a short amount of time. If teenage stoners can figure out hydroponics and in their basements and harvest weed you can do it to feed yourself delicious sustainable veggies. There are many resources out there to help you this is just an example of an amazingly organized large project.

I wonder if these vegetables have any taste... I suppose that they plant blueberries and tomatos in this way in Netherlands.
