This tune is for Figure 1 of Quadrille Sett 5 in the "The Peter Beemer Manuscript," handwritten for and played from for the dances in the mining camp of Warren's Diggins, Idaho, in the 1860s. Vivian published this manuscript, the first music manuscript from pioneer times in the West from which a band actually played dances that has been discovered and published. Quadrille's, today known as square dances, were the popular dances in the pioneer West. A quadrille had, usually, between four and six "figures." There were as many separate tunes in a quadrille "Sett" as their were figures. After one figure was completed, the band would stop for a few moments, and then start the music for the next figure. It is performed here by Vivian Williams, violin, and Phil Williams, guitar. More about this manuscript can be found at www.voyagerrecords.com.
