Matthew Barney is best known as the producer and creator of the "CREMASTER" films. The title of the films refers to the muscle that raises and lowers the male reproductive system according to temperature, external stimulation, or fear. The films themselves are a grand mixture of history, autobiography, and mythology—a universe in which symbols are densely layered and interconnected.

Matthew Barney is featured in the Season 1 episode "Consumption" of the Art21 series "Art:21 -- Art in the Twenty-First Century".

Well, maybe art doesn't have to have an entirely cohesive explanation to be valid. Artwork is full of loose-ends, it's impossible for the artist to fully comprehend the scope of its effect. Plus language is so limiting- a reason why artists turn to other forms of expression in the first place.

  • id luv to shove that camera up his ass and make a film about that- this guy is a rip off- art school you paid to learn this ??? houdini would shoot your ass-

  • This guy should go back to art school... and become a mime.

  • @rubenstein418 Well, consider the whole point. His work is purported to be full of masonic content... so why should it be clear? I mean, to the everyman? I feel like this stuff is aimed at a very specific kind of audience, and you and I are not in it.

  • No, art is a language form.

  • Van Gogh sold one painting in his lifetime, actually. And it was used to pay his rent. Now his work has been so demeaned to the point that it has become kitsch.

  • really, I had no idea...

  • i think the point is to make us not have a clue what on earth he means.

  • hahahaha!

  • That is a silly opinion to have. I mean to deny that there is art left is to deny that there is beauty, ugliness, murder, birth, trash, cleanliness, etc. left.
