Unusual magnetic phenomena observations are found in this SinkScience #7 video.

First, we see a rotating and revolving ball magnet in a pyrex bowl. The revolving was expected; the rotating was not. Is this the same phenomenon as the Earth rotating around it's axis as it revolves around the Sun?

Secondly, we see a ball magnet inscribe cloverleaf patterns in a pyrex bowl at lower rpms, in circles and ellipses as the speed is increased.

Third, and most important, is the ball magnet suddenly reverses direction at high speed, and revolves faster and smoother AGAINST the prevailing magnetic field than it did with it. Surprisingly strange behaviour!
Eddy currents? Magnetic lag? Weird alien technology?

Explanations are welcome!

YouTube user AdminOnDuty has suggested in the comments that the magnetic ball is influenced by the catenoid space of the magnetic field of the magnets of the turbine, and something called the event horizon.
Here is a link to a diagram of the catenoid magnetic lines of force:

  • can you point me to how to make on of those turbines

  • @patmac573

To build a Tesla CD Turbine, see my instructions at Instructables. Link is in the "Show more" box under this video. I highly recommend Instructables for those who like to build things!

My Instructables member name is "mrfixits".

  • you need to apply fluoro lumenscent paint to the magnetic ball. This will allow viewers to easily view the pattern made by the magnetic ball in the bowl. Attach an rpm indicator to the turbine and tell us what type of magnets and their strength and properties.

  • @MrPhfaty

Thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately, that turbine blew up a couple of years ago.

Perhaps it's time for a new turbine, and to duplicate some previous experiments with more exactitude.

  • @MrPhfaty

The 6 magnets on the top disc inside of the turbine are 1/2 inch x 1/2 inch neodymium cylinder magnets in N52 Grade. They are all positioned "North up".

The sphere magnets in the bowl are 1/2 inch and 3/16 inch neodymium in N42 strength.

I get magnets from K&G Magnetics. (link in the "Show more" box)

The rpm varies from 50 to 900 rpm, and yes, a tach reading would be helpful in this experiment.

  • Your spheres are making an epicycloid with a phase lag. Try marking the large sphere with a magic marker. Fun video.

  • @Cosmickev101

And could you make the pencil rotate backwards to the rotation of the magnet underneath, as seen in this video, or did you get that far?

  • @MrfixitRick just overlooked it thanks.............

  • @trdjunkie

Glad to hear I have been a source of inspiration!

The Tesla CD Turbine can be finicky to build, but is a ton of fun!

Build instructions are available at my site at Instructables(dot)com under member "mrfixits".
