Your spheres are making an epicycloid with a phase lag. Try marking the large sphere with a magic marker. Fun video.
-
And could you make the pencil rotate backwards to the rotation of the magnet underneath, as seen in this video, or did you get that far?
-
@MrfixitRick just overlooked it thanks.............

Glad to hear I have been a source of inspiration!
The Tesla CD Turbine can be finicky to build, but is a ton of fun!
Build instructions are available at my site at Instructables(dot)com under member "mrfixits".

Let me know if you have any problems or questions.

can you point me to how to make on of those turbines

@patmac573
To build a Tesla CD Turbine, see my instructions at Instructables. Link is in the "Show more" box under this video. I highly recommend Instructables for those who like to build things!
My Instructables member name is "mrfixits".

you need to apply fluoro lumenscent paint to the magnetic ball. This will allow viewers to easily view the pattern made by the magnetic ball in the bowl. Attach an rpm indicator to the turbine and tell us what type of magnets and their strength and properties.

Thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately, that turbine blew up a couple of years ago.
Perhaps it's time for a new turbine, and to duplicate some previous experiments with more exactitude.

The 6 magnets on the top disc inside of the turbine are 1/2 inch x 1/2 inch neodymium cylinder magnets in N52 Grade. They are all positioned "North up".
The sphere magnets in the bowl are 1/2 inch and 3/16 inch neodymium in N42 strength.
I get magnets from K&G Magnetics. (link in the "Show more" box)
The rpm varies from 50 to 900 rpm, and yes, a tach reading would be helpful in this experiment.
