In early May 2011 the SNP won an historic majority in the Scottish Parliament, bring closer the possibility of an independent Scotland. It got me thinking about the original Wars of Independence in the late 13th and early 14th centuries featuring William Wallace and Robert Bruce and in particular, the Declaration of Arbroath, signed by the nobles and common folk of Scotland on 6th April 1320. As a result I wrote this song. The chorus is loosely based on the most famous passage of the Declaration, namely .....

  • Wallace Wallace, he made them flee, he tried to set his country free, Nae braver man you'd likely see, but he lives on now, in you and me. No country can forever claim, to have such men er again, was not for riches that he fought nor the glory it was not. This man stood tall and did not fall, he was defiant of them all. Only when dishonour came, from menteith a hated name, did Scotlands Hero suffer dear, and met his end with no fear.
