my roomie's family was like that, and we have now started her sister on Harry Potter for the first time at age 18, and she's completely obsessed!! Harry Potter teaches friendship, love, courage, sacrifice, and not going along with the crowd and losing yourself. If you teach your kids critical thinking (something that a lot of churches don't do for some reason) there should be no problems with being influenced to join the occult lol.

Well, some Christian pastors thought the books might get children interested in the occult, or possibly even possessed by demons. There are lots of pastors who think Harry Potter is a positive series for kids, though. It's just that a minority of them control their congregations by ranting about the evils of pop culture, so as to limit their exposure to other worldviews. My mother was influenced by such fear mongering pastors.
