October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. HHS Steering Committee on Violence Against Women and the Coordinating Committee on Women's Health hosted an event, Bridging the Gap: Screening and Counseling for Intimate Partner Violence in Health Care Settings, on October 9th at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The event focused on encouraging a comprehensive health care response to victims of domestic violence. Dr. Howard Koh, Assistant Secretary for Health, opened the session. Other speakers included Lisa James, Health Director from FUTURES, and representatives from the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and state/local organizations addressing domestic violence in the health setting. Lynn Rosenthal, White House Advisor on Violence Against Women, spoke passionately about this issue.
