In the Dominican Republic, a tropical island-nation, tourists flock to pristine beaches unaware that a few miles away thousands of dispossessed Haitians have toiled under armed-guard on plantations harvesting sugarcane, much of which ends up in U.S. kitchens. They work grueling hours and frequently lack decent housing, clean water, electricity, education or healthcare. Narrated by Paul Newman, "The Price of Sugar" follows Father Christopher Hartley, a charismatic Spanish priest, as he organizes some of this hemisphere's poorest people to fight for their basic human rights. This film raises key questions about where the products we consume originate and at what human cost they are produced.

  • I'm surprised there are not more views on this, but more surprised at how many "dislikes" there are...! Then again, I suppose we don't like the truth about these situations, because it means we're accountable to them. We just want to vacation there, turn our eyes to the shimmering ocean and coastal "disneyland world" that we purchase, and not the inland injustices just down the road. It is truly sad.

  • @ticocorat i completely agree with you. im still in shock i didn't know this was happening in my on country. i feel sick...i feel sad..about everything that we have done with our country.

  • @marjay11 i understand your hate but not all dominicans are the same.

  • @chavo1373 obviamente te hace falta leer a qui hay que separar el racismo de la ignorancia (no es que halla mucha diferencia.)

  • @DinaSpeaks Look imbecil nobody is forcing anybody to go to DR to work on sugarcane. They go overthere OBVIOUSLY cause it is a better life than what they get in Haiti. Matter of fact all Dominicans with the exception of these foreign entities that own the sugar plantation want all the Haitians out of the country. We are not getting any benefits from having the Haitinas working cutting sugar. What we get is the scum of foreighners ignorants that do not know what is going on.
